Quarterback Rankings

Dan Swanarrow           Total: 25.1                  Stock          Ranking: 1

Arm Strength/Accuracy: (8) Able to make the deep passes consistently with little adjustment needed by the receiver.

Leadership: (7.5) Will get down if things are not going his way, poise will be key early on.

Drafting: (9.6) Made the right call last year, drafting big bodies to combat challenging conditions.

Comments: Dan answered the critics last year with a solid championship performance, his 2nd in the last 3 years. He will gamble a lot, staying focused and spreading ball around will be crucial for his success.

top

Norm Smyth                 Total: 24.2                  Stock          Ranking: 2

Arm Strength/Accuracy: (7.7) Timing was off with his receivers; had to check of and scramble on numerous occasions. Norm fell victim to many drop balls.

Leadership: (9) Norm will battle to the end, hates to lose and will push his teammates to compete with everything they have.

Drafting: (7.5) Norm went with a smaller team last year, roster looked good on paper, but could not hold up on the field.  More focus on depth is a must.

Comments: Much like Dan last year, the critics will be out for Norm this year.  Failure to reach the final will be disastrous as many will think his QB days are over.

top

Donnie Cunningham      Total: 22.5                  Stock          Ranking: 3

Arm Strength/Accuracy: (8) With a bullet of an arm, and descent scrambling ability Donnie has great tools.  Accuracy down the field is an issue, but looks to be gaining confidence.

Leadership: (6.5) Lack of knowledge of the position and not establishing himself as a leader is draw back.  Progress is being made as he gains more experience as a QB.

Drafting: (8) Drafted a good mix of size and speed and it worked well as the Green Machine made it to the final.  Another strong draft is vital for Donnie.

Comments: Donnie came within one catch of his first Stuperbowl and should be someone to watch for.  Donnie is ready to step into the spot-light, but will need deep solid draft to do so.

top

Alex MacPhee              Total: 19.7                  Stock:           Ranking: 4

Arm Strength/Accuracy: (6.3) Alex has the arm to get the ball down field and has the movement in the pocket to create time.  It’s hitting the receiver that’s the problem.

Leadership: (6.4) The most crucial aspect of Alex’s game that needs to be developed. If he can have a good start and surround himself with deep team, the confidence will build as the day goes on.

Drafting: (7) Alex has done a descent job at the draft, needs to focus on drafting experienced players who can make the most of his talent.

Comments: Nobody needs a shot in the arm more then Alex.  Leadership will make or break him on Sunday.  If Alex can take the reigns and find his rhythm early, he will be handful.  Otherwise he will be catching the ball instead of throwing it.

Player Rankings

Derek Smith                 Total: 28.5                   Stock:           Ranking: 1

Offense: (10) The most dangerous weapon on field, Derek can freeze defenders in his sleep.  Taking away the deep pattern is the only way to contain him.

Defense: (9) Can play man and zone effectively, excellent closing speed and will make QB’s check off regularly.

Intangibles: (9.5) Proven winner who will shut his mouth and do the dirty work in order to win. A team first guy that has the rings to prove it.

Comments: The “Game Breaker” as he’s known in these parts showed again last year what winning is all about.  It would be a shock to see Derek not taken first; he gets the job done year in and year out.

top

Rob Davidson              Total: 27.5                   Stock:           Ranking: 2

Offense: (8.5) Very good at running patterns and is able make space for other receivers.  Rarely takes a play off.

Defense: (10) The “shut down”corner of the Stuperbowl draft. His skill level eliminates the top offense threat; you can’t ask for more then that.

Intangibles: (9) Rob leads by example, can get fiery when needed and can play a physical speed game.

Comments: Last year was his first time out of the winners circle, and was not pleased about it.  Expect a very determined Irishman Sunday who will wreak havoc on both sides of the ball.

top

Stephan Koechlin         Total: 27.5                   Stock:           Ranking: 3

Offense: (9) Will be a big threat underneath, runs crosses and red zone patterns very well.  Is suspect to an odd drop ball on occasion.

Defense : (9.5) Can be very tough on receivers; he will gamble and usually come up Aces.

Intangibles: (9) Team players don’t come much better then Stephan, unselfish and very aware on the field.  If the edge is there, it will be tough afternoon for the opponents, especially on defense

Comments: The hype surrounding the return of “The Koech” is at fever pitch.  His two year hiatus is over and big things are expected from the big man.  It will be interesting if Stephan reaches the levels that are expected.  Don’t plan on seeing the “Friendly Giant on Sunday.

top

Andrew Arsenou          Total: 27.0                   Stock:           Ranking: 4

Offense: (9) Never gives up on a route and will adjust on the fly.  Very good at reading defensive coverage’s and finding the soft spots.

Defense: (9) Rarely gets beat in man coverage. Has some problems playing zones; but his speed makes up for any shortcomings.

Intangibles: (9) What he doesn’t posses in skill he makes up for in effort. This kid is absolute sandpaper.  With a guy like this on your team you can really feed off his energy.  That goes far in a long grueling day.

Comments: I’m sure some are surprised by his ranking.  Andrew is definitely not the glamour pick, but nor is his game.  He will know doubt play a decisive roll on Sunday

top

Mark Cameron Total: 26.5                   Stock:           Ranking: 5

Offense: (8.5) Great hands and really flustered the opposing defenses, plays a large role as a safety value for the QB.

Defense: (9.5) Had a huge day on the defensive side of the ball.  Speed is a concern and will give him problems.

Intangibles: (8.5) A student of the game, Mark was a ball hawk and seem to be around the ball constantly.

Comments: A last minute fill in due to injury, “The Hammer” made his presence felt.  The question is whether the sophomore jinx will hit (see 2003 MVP Dave Butt).

top

Mike Wiseman Total: 25.0                   Stock:         Ranking: 6

Offense: (9) Lots of speed and game breaking ability.  Had a few flashes of brilliance but otherwise weather conditions bogged him down most of the day.

Defense: (8.5) Very good on his reads and closed well.  Made adjustments on the fly and was able to provide “help” for teammates when needed.

Intangibles: (7.5) Fierce competitor, but can work both ways for Mike.  Focus and not getting flustered by the opponents is a question mark for Mike, as his feathers can be easily ruffled

Comments: Mike was the big ticket item on the draft board last year that I feel didn’t pan out as well as I thought.  Hopefully conditions will suit Mike’s game; otherwise another frustrating afternoon is on tap.

top

Mathew Froggatt               Total: 24.5                   Stock:           Ranking: 7

Offense: (9) One of the key guys on O all day. A tough runner who generated lots of YAC.  Good hands, could’ve been great ones if he made “The Catch”

Defense: (8.5) Always in the middle of the scrum, Mathew plays to his strengths very well causing havoc at the line of scrimmage. Lacks speed on man coverage.

Intangibles: (7) If the team is not excelling, Mathew has a tough time keeping the peace. Can get caught up in the ‘trash talk” and his game will suffer for it.

Comments: As a championship and a possible MVP slip through his hands one has to wonder the toll it has taken on Mathew.  Time doesn’t heal this wound, only a championship does.

top

Scott Owen                  Total: 24.5                   Stock:           Ranking: 8

Offense: (8) A solid receiver underneath that QB’s love.  Great blocker who creates a ton of space.

Defense: (7.5) Slowed by an Achilles injury; speed is a question mark.  Scott makes up for his speed with his knowledge of the game.  Great communicator on the field.

Intangibles: (9) Not afraid to call out teammates and leads by example.

Comments: A Stuperbowl champion with a heart of a lion.  Scott never quits and should be a lock to go early on Sunday.

top

Brian Dunham               Total: 24.5                   Stock:          Ranking: 9

Offense: (8) Difficult to handle in the open field, but was slowed by a knee injury early on. Brian will get physical when needed to get the extra yards.

Defense: (9) Brian can cover anybody, and has the endurance to last a long grinding day.

Intangibles: (7.5) At times Brian lacks the aggression needed to win at this level.  Surrounded by the right teammates we are hoping Brian can deliver

Comments: Brian is coming in healthy and with a year under his belt, his upside is tremendous.  The question is will Brian will leave everything on the field?

top

Dave Butt                     Total: 24.0                   Stock:         Ranking: 10

Offense: (7.5) Dave’s patterns are very crisp and the hands are great, however Dave lacked the jump that we’ve seen in the past.

Defense: (8.5) Solid both ways, but does take the occasionally play off.  Will take risks and it usually pays off.

Intangibles: (8.0) When motivated Dave can be unstoppable as we’ve seen.  A very workmanlike attitude which rubs off on his teammates.

Comments: With 2003 a distant memory Dave needs to find that motivation that made him the 2003 MVP.  With a strong performance Dave can bolt up the board.

top

Tim Horton                   Total: 23.5                   Stock:           Ranking: 11

Offense: (7.5) Big body receiver who provides great blocking.  Seemed to get stronger and gain confidence as the day went on.

Defense: (9) A key addition to any defensive squad.  Can make quick reads and create turnovers.

Intangibles: (7) The sophomore leads by example; great stamina that pushes his teammates.  Tim has to be more vocal on the field.

Comments:  If available Tim would be a great pick up in the 3rd round.  Weather conditions will not have an effect on his productivity.

top

Ken Diamond               Total: 23.5                   Stock:         Ranking: 12

Offense: (6.5) Clears space for other receivers very well.  Slowed by a sprain knee early on, and questionable hands, Ken’s production was very limited.

Defense: (8.5) Very good in zone and can make adjustments on the fly.  Lacks speed to cover a #1 wide out, but can read plays with the best of them.

Intangibles: (8.5) Good leader in the huddle and plays with intensity.

Comments: A solid 3rd round selection. Ken must step up and be effective on both sides of the ball.

top

Justin Adamo                Total: 23.0                   Stock:         Ranking: 13

Offense: (7) Justin has to much speed to handle; but had a lot of problems holding on to the ball.  Has a good eye for the field.

Defense: (8) No problem playing man, can cover anybody. In zone tends to drift and tries to do too much

Intangibles: (8) Very vocal on both sides of the ball.  His speed is very effective on special teams.

Comments:  Potential is there, but the hands?  Justin needs to focus on his game this year.  His game can explode if surrounded by a veteran team, which wasn’t the case with Gold Rush last year.

top

Murray Macken           Total: 23.0                   Stock:           Ranking: 14

Offense: (8) Great size and speed, but lack of consistency at QB positions slowed his progress.

Defense: (8) Rarely caught out of position. Murray did a great job closing on the ball carrier.  More experience will lead to more INT’s.

Intangibles: (7) Character guy who can excel in the right environment.

Comments: Gold Rush wasn’t the right fit for Murray, I expect big thing from Murray this year as he establishes himself as one of StuperBowl elite players.

top

Paul Simon ®               Total: 23.0                   Stock:           Ranking: 15 (combine report)

Offense: (8) During the combine Paul ran his routes very well, some difficulties holding on to the ball in traffic.  Above avg speed.

Defense: (9) Paul is very comfortable in zone defense, seemed to get flustered with teammates when assignments were missed.

Intangibles: (6) The rookie will play his role well.  Will show frustration and get vocal about it.

Comments: Paul will be around the ball all day.  The rookie will be challenged by unfavorable weather conditions.  A very determined player that will use his size very well.

top

Darren Bone                 Total: 22.5                   Stock:           Ranking: 16

Offense: (7) Descent speed and can makes the catches if given the opportunity.  Darren needs to provide better blocking for his teammates down field.

Defense: (7.5) Avg speed, but good instincts.  Darren will take a few plays off.

Intangibles: (7) Darren played a solid roll helping the Red Men achieve Stuperbowl glory.  His experience will be welcome addition to any team this year.

Comments: Darren stepped up his game dramatically last year.  I look for Darren to continue to develop game and play a more significant roll on both sides of the ball.

top

Ryan Tustin                  Total: 21.5                   Stock:           Ranking: 17

Offense: (7.5) Never really was able to show off his speed and hands.  The skills are there if he chooses to use them.

Defense: (7.5) Showed great presence on the field in spurts.  Ryan needs to show more aggressiveness.

Intangibles: (6) Worked hard no matter what the score was.  More emotion will only benefit Ryan and his teammates.

Comments: A quiet guy, whose play speaks volumes.  Ryan’s a sleeper and with a veteran team he can be pushed to another level.

top

James McCulloch         Total: 21.0                   Stock:         Ranking: 18

Offense: (6) James provided great blocking downfield.  Was a non-factor catching the ball.  James has good hands but was unable to get open.

Defense: (8) James was a rock on defense.  Disrupted routes and caused turnovers; a beast in the secondary.

Intangibles: (7) James is a solid team player.  James was not getting the ball on Sunday; but kept it in check.  Fatigue was an issue as the day went on.

Comments: It’s hard to say where he goes from here.  James could easily climb up the charts next year if he can contribute more on O.

top

Niall Smyth                   Total: 20.5                   Stock:           Ranking: 19

Offense: (6.5) Good speed but lacks consistency running his routes.  Has no problem doing the grunt work needed for the team to be successful.

Defense: (7) Showed signs of improvement and a better understanding of zone coverages.  Niall should continue to improve this year.

Intangibles: (7) Great team guy that can get teammates fired up.  A roll player who shows a lot of heart on the field.

Comments: I look for improvement with his route running and better man coverage on D.  Overall Niall improved his game and had no problem getting his nose dirty.

top

Jerome Adamo Total: 20.5                   Stock:           Ranking: 20

Offense: (7.5) Jerome seemed to be one of the only scoring threats for Gold Rush on Sunday.  Showed great alertness and made some clutch catches.

Defense: (6.5) Lacked speed which was evident on Sunday.  Has to be more involved and focused to be a factor.

Intangibles: (6.5) Jerome can have a negative impact on his teammates.  A better focus is needed on his game.

Comments: A rigorous off season work out has Jerome ready to step into the spotlight that once shined down on him in the year 2000.

top

Brad Turpin                  Total: 19.0                   Stock:           Ranking: 21

Offense: (6) Brad is one of the best route runners and can get open with ease; but had a terrible time holding onto the ball.

Defense: (7) Fundamental sound on D and used his size very well.  Consistency continued to be an issue.

Intangibles: (6) Brad lacks consistency; he has to show a constant determination on both sides of the ball.

Comments: Brad needs to go back to the basics.  More confidence on O is needed.  Big things were expected last year; hopefully Brad can turn it around this year.

top

Paul Girard                   Total: 18.5                   Stock:         Ranking: 22 (combine report)

Offense: (6.5) At the combine Paul showed soft hands and his knack for getting open.  However the combine is one thing, Stuperbowl Sunday is a whole other deal…

Defense: (6) Paul was step behind in various schemes.  Needs to take advantage of his size and better foot work is required.

Intangibles: (6) Paul can be up and down at times, can be frustrated by the opponent quite easily.

Comments: Coming back from a series of injuries over the past 2 years, I don’t know what to expect from Paul.  Patience will be the key to his success.

top

David Yoshida  Total: 18.0                   Stock:           Ranking: 23

Offense: (5) David was gradually integrated into the offense and showed a lot drive and determination to succeed. A little more experience is needed to develop as a receiver.

Defense: (6) Dave learned on the go and grasped different schemes with relative ease.

Intangibles: (7) With experience David will only improve in this area.  David showed a lot of grit and it rubbed off on his teammates.

Comments:  David went out to prove the critics wrong; and did just that.

top

Dan Clark ®                Total: NA                    Stock: NA       Ranking: 24

Comments:  Due to agent issues, no report is available regarding Dan Clark at this time.

This is my final breakdown of the 2004 Stuperbowl Draft.  Injuries & Weather conditions have altered the projected draft list dramatically.  Before I announce the list; here is the latest injury report.

Injury Report - January 28, 2004 5:01pm EST

OUT – Stephan Koechlin (broken ankle) - Replacement: Mark “Hammer” Cameron
OUT – Joel Julien (family issues) – Replacement: Craig (Sara’s boyfriend from McFly’s)

Day to Day – Rob Davidson (pinch nerve, lower back)
Day to Day – Jerome Adamo (bruised foot)
Day to Day – Niall Smyth (back sprain)

Final 2004 STUPERBOWL  'Projected" Draft List

Captains

Norman Smyth This QB has all the skills, speed, leadership,. strong arm, & good mind for the game. Changing plays on the fly is staple in his offence.  Anything less then another championship will not be acceptable.
Donnie Cunningham Easily the strongest arm in the QB position.  A better understanding of the game & he is well on his way.  Surrounded by the right players, history could be in the making.
Alex McPhee Good athlete, with very good tools. This is a make or break year for Alex.  If he can take control of his team & be a leader… good things will happen.
Dan Swanarrow The Jury is out this year.  A very poor performance last year has left many with questions if he can ever regain his championship form.  One has to wonder if he is asking that question himself.  The QB feeling the most pressure on Sunday.

Players

# Player Details
1. Derek Smith Big target with great hands and good speed.  You just can’t pass this kind of talent up. Simply put  “Game Breaker”
2. Brian Dunham All around great athlete, Very quick, weather conditions might hamper his speed. Brian will empty the tank on every play.  Solid team player, but could use a little attitude on the field
3. Rob Davidson Pinch nerve or not, this guy just gets the job done.  Plays both sides of the ball very well.  Once a sleeper in the draft, not anymore, just have to look at his hand to figure that out…
4. Dave Butt Last years MVP has been met with much criticism and seems to have the “one year wonder” tag applied to him. He looked very motivated at the Combine & should come up big on Sunday.
5. Mike Wiseman Never have I rated a rookie this high, but this kid has some great tools. Can he hold up on a frigid Sunday afternoon (?). That’s the question.  If used properly, Mike has big play potential.  MVP bells could be ringing…
6. Ken Diamond  Very good leader & play’s hard.  A defense first type player makes him very valuable.  The other side of the ball is where the performance drops, literally, if the hands are making the catches Sunday, he will have a big day.
7. Scott Owen The big man makes his return after suffering a torn-Achilles.  After a year of rehab Scott looks to return to form.  Sunday’s weather favors Scott, a big possession receiver who knows the game, how can you not like that.
8. Justin Adamo Speed kills and this guy has it. Now a seasoned vet and battled tested, Justin needs to bring his game to the next level. Needs to stay focused & hold onto the ball.  Weather conditions will play a factor in his productivity.
9. Murray Macken Another rookie who makes his debut on Sunday, great size & great hands (?)… The jury is out. Murray is another of those “natural athletes”, if motivated Murray could cause a lot of headaches for opposing teams.
10. Mathew Froggatt On & Off the field problems have made Mathew the wildcard of Stuperbowl.  Great size & conditions that favor his ability, Mathew “should” have some great games on Sunday.  Its crucial that Mathew’s surrounded by vets & a strong team to make the most out of his game, otherwise… have the ambulance on stand by.
11. Brad Turpin One of those sleeper players. Brad seems to be always around the ball & has very little problem catching it. Defensively, Brad seems to take to many plays off.  Focus is key for Brad to have a big day.
12. Darren Bone Great team guy, that can come up with the big play every once & a while.  Seems to lack the desire that’s required.  Another guy that if surrounded by a veteran team, can come up big.
13. Paul Girard possession receiver that can contribute in the right system.  Seems to get rattled quickly. Must keep his cool & take care of the ball.
14. Dave McCulloch good hands, will go to war. Conditions on Sunday will suit his type of game. Solid selection if still available.
15. James McCulloch Big receiver, plays good defense & understands the game well. The hard going that’s expected Sunday will play into this favor.
16. Niall Smyth Quick & play’s focused.  Niall is not easily rattled.  If Niall can make the proper adjustments on the fly offensively & defensively his value to his team will increase as the day goes.
17. Jerome Adamo An underrated player that can make a difference if giving the opportunity.  The rings prove it, this former MVP needs to believe in his teammates & keep his head in the game to be productive.
18. Mark Cameron Big receiver option, will play a big roll in the underneath game.  Mark will be handful handle on both sides of the ball.  Questions on how he will hold up during a long cold battle loom large.
19. David Yoshida David makes his debut on Sunday.  Not much info is available, but much more will be after Sunday, hopefully more good then bad.
